If your company is considering switching or replacing your current Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) platform, you’re not alone. Whether a business has grown too large and complicated for “free” solutions such as Excel and open-source software, or find their current PLM either lacking in or sunsetting features, migrations happen.
Migrating to a new PLM can be a daunting task, but we’re here to help. Here’s how to migrate your PLM, step-by-step:
1. Have a plan
The step that will save your team the most time, effort, and headache comes before exporting any data from your old system. Once you create a plan that takes into account what data is important to you, what legacy data you’d like to migrate, and how you want your data to be structured in the new PLM system; it will make the actual migration exponentially easier.
Start by answering these three questions about your data:
- Are you keeping your current CPNs and CPN Scheme? Or replacing it entirely?
- Will the CPN Scheme be Non-, Semi-, or Fully Intelligent?
- Are you keeping your current Revs and Revision Scheme? Or replacing it entirely?
- Simple, Major/Minor, Major/Minor/Documentation?
- Will you be changing your data model?
- Categories
- Attributes
- Lifecycles
Having these answers will help you create a plan for your migration, and give you a good idea of how you want your data to be presented on your new platform.
2. Export from your old PLM
Once you have a plan of attack, you’ll need to get your product data out of your old system. If you’re coming from Excel or Google Sheets, that’s as simple as saving as a CSV. For other platforms, export your data as a CSV. Not only will this make it easier to upload to your new platform, you can also save this file as a snapshot of your data in case you need to reference it later.
3. Create a Duro account

4. Use Duro’s import tool & customize
Upload your CSV file into Duro’s import tool. It will prompt you to connect your column headers to the appropriate formats. This is because while all PLM platforms share similarities, they are rarely a 1-to-1 translation. For example, a “change status” may have different terminology from one PLM to another.
